Tools and Materials You’ll Need
Before you crawl under the car, gather everything in one spot. Nothing worse than being under a hot oil pan with a loose drain plug and realizing you left the crush washer on the workbench. - Socket or wrench for the drain plug: Most common sizes are 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, and 10mm. My 2014 Silverado 5.3L uses a 15mm socket. A 2005 Honda Civic uses a 17mm. Check your service manual or crawl under with a set of combination wrenches. A 6-point socket is non-negotiable—12-point sockets round off drain plugs.

- Funnel and rags: A simple plastic funnel with a flexible spout works. Keep a roll of shop towels—Scott Shop Towels in the blue roll, not paper towels that disintegrate.
- Safety equipment: Ramps or jack stands—never a scissor jack. Gloves—nitrile, not latex. Safety glasses. Hot oil at 200°F on your forearm will ruin your day.
Total cost for a first-time tool buy: about $80 for the torque wrench, filter wrench, and pan. After that, each oil change runs $25-$45 for conventional or $50-$80 for synthetic depending on your engine’s capacity and viscosity.
Choosing the Right Oil for Your Engine
Oil viscosity isn’t a suggestion—it’s a hydraulic specification. Your engine’s oil pump, bearing clearances, and variable valve timing system were designed around a specific flow rate at a specific temperature. Using 10W-40 in an engine that calls for 0W-20 doesn’t make it “more protected.” It makes the oil pump work harder, reduces flow to the cam phasers, and can trigger a check engine light for VVT performance codes.
Start with what’s printed on the oil fill cap. If it says 5W-30, use 5W-30. If it says dexos1 Gen 2 or Gen 3, that’s the GM specification. For Ford engines built after 2010, look for Motorcraft-specific blends or any oil that meets WSS-M2C946-A or WSS-M2C945-A. Honda engines prefer oils with HTO-06 certification. These aren’t marketing terms—they’re test standards for timing chain wear protection, piston deposit control, and shear stability.
When it comes to brand, you’ve got three tiers. OEM oils like ACDelco dexos1 Full Synthetic 5W-30 ($7.50 per quart at the dealer) are formulated specifically for the engines they’re sold under. They include the correct additive package for the PCV system, the catalytic converter, and the VVT phasers. Premium aftermarket synthetics like Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20 ($8.50 per quart at AutoZone) or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 ($9.00 per quart) meet or exceed the OEM spec and often include additional detergents. Conventional vs synthetic: If your engine was designed for conventional oil (pre-2005 mostly), you can switch to synthetic at any mileage. The old myth about synthetic causing leaks in high-mileage engines is false—synthetic oil has smaller molecules, but it doesn’t create leaks where none existed. It will, however, clean out sludge that was previously plugging a leak, so if your engine already had a weeping rear main seal, synthetic will make it drip. Locating the Drain Plug and Oil Filter
The drain plug is almost always at the lowest point of the oil pan. On a front-wheel-drive car like a 2012 Honda Civic, it’s on the passenger side of the pan, visible from under the front bumper. On a rear-wheel-drive truck like a 2015 Ford F-150, it’s centered on the pan, often behind the front axle.
